Thoughts on the Retroid Pocket 5 (BEFORE YOU BUY) | Zu Reviews!🔥

👉 The Retroid Pocket 5 is due to launch on September 9th, and I think our pals at @retroidpocket3773 are done releasing their hourly news updates, so it’s time for Zu to assemble all we know and give you his thoughts. With a Sanpdragon 865, a 5.5″ 1080p AMOLED screen, some thicc ergonomics, and a $200 price tag, could the RP5 (or the Retroid Pocket Mini) be the new mid-range handheld king?

  1. What do you think? Are you going to hop on the early bird express, wait for reviews, or skip this one entirely? Let us know in the comments!

(Also this was somehow our 500th video)

  2. Always wait on retroid devices, they always do something to mess up a launch. Rp4 models still have quality issues that made me avoid them.

  3. Hey Zu can you stop making me feel old by calling the GBA/GameCube crowd over 30’s? I’m 28 I’m not even there yet 💀

  4. If you are playing PS2 and GameCube, then I believe that the Mini will simply a better option, the larger screen will be great for the DS and 3DS, the larger real-estate will help accommodate the dual screens. personally the all black options are the way to go. The implementation of Linux installs via SD cards is just fantastic.

  5. While hearing these Flaws are a Hard Pill to Swallow. I should still have some level of Skepticism just in case.

  6. I've had my RP4 Pro for a little over a month and like it overall. I'm was a little upset they announced the 5 so soon but I have mixed feelings about the performance. I do hope they come out with a 5 pro with better performance and more ram. I think I would upgrade if the switch performance improves by a decent margin.

  7. Android 10? Nah, I'll wait for the Pro version. Regardless, it's always better to wait and see if there are any quality issues with the first batch of units.

  8. I am kinda hoping the Odin 2 just gets a USD50 price drop on all models. That would kill the market for the 5 here.

  9. Since I already have a SteamDeck, the only thing that gets me interested in this is the Linux support because I'm done caring about Android. But then the question is: is there a reason to want this since I have the 'Deck? Sure it's smaller, but I have small systems in the form of the Miyoo Mini (v3) and the RGB30 if I want compact gaming, even if I can't play "everything" on those. Is this something worth diving into the Retroid pool for the first time on just because they dared speak the name Linux?

  10. They literally said the PRO device launch right after regular device launch will "never happen again" and they tweeted this from their official twitter you can go find it within 5minutes of reply diving.

  11. It's comically overpriced. The SoC is a sidegrade at best of the RP4P's Dimensity 1100, OLED is very concerning for gaming, because of all games having static elements and ghosting still being an issue with OLED, combined with the PWM flickering issue, then there's its lack of RAM—why is it only 6GB? 200$ and you're getting a paltry 6GB of RAM? That's pathetic. It's also less than the RP4P's 8GB… Android 10 is also absolutely ancient. There's no excuse for it having such an old OS. And the glass thing. Cool, it's a frail and slippery device. You know what glass doesn't like, by the way? Getting hot. You know what the SD865 is famous for? Getting hot. Very hot.

    There's a reason the SD865 wasn't widely adopted.

It's an overpriced nightmare. The Mini is the "better deal" but it isn't a good deal at all, and all of the above applies in spades to it too. Let's also not forget Retroid's quality has slipped so bad in recent years they had to unlaunch and discontinue the Flip after just two months and all of the shoulder button/joystick issues of the RP4/P.

  12. You definitely know they're coming out with a pro version. Ill wait for that. Don't feel like replacing my pro4 already. Too soon ya know?

  13. I more interested in the mini. Need a good 4:3 device and that oled screen could be the cherry on top that seals it for me. That said, I'm waiting for reviews first.

  14. I aren't feeling like this is a big enough leap from what the RG556 manages on its OLED screen device to justify upgrading… we shall see come reviews of hardware I guess!

  15. I'm excited for the RP5! I can't wait to use Armbian with Box86, Box64, Fex-Emu, Wine, and Hangover! 💪😤

  16. Does sd865 run fzero gx at 100%? Rogue leader? If yes, get me a mini even if I can't see the screen. If not, after more than a year now is when I want my steam deck the most, so I'll pass. But for those who don't have anything, 200€ is fantastic.

  17. So did they go with Android 10 because the SD865 launched at the same time, so full support for it was easier to implement? That would imply that support for older drivers are dropped from later Android kernels, and that…really doesn’t sound right to me

  18. At this point I’ve got enough handhelds, including the Odin 2, and I’m just good. Mostly using the RP4, Rg Cube and Odin 2 and I just don’t see the need for either of these. The mini would be a great option if I didn’t have those, but the Retroid face buttons are so loud I often can’t even use my rp4.

  19. I waited for RP5 now I'm thinking of Odin 2 but for like $20 more I can get a refurb steam deck. So thats where I'm at now.

  20. RP5 looks so tempting but I'm worried my wife will murder me. RG35XXH, RG556 and awaiting delivery of my RG40XXH (for my son). Will have to use stealth 😂
