GMG Reviews – DARKTIDE: The Miniature Game by Games Workshop

I didn’t really see this one coming; but let’s check out DARKTIDE… the new Solo/CoOp 40k RPG-Light tactical skirmish game! Based on the (kinda-ok) Video Game of the same name, you’re taking the role of REJECTS… Imperial citizens held captive by an Inquisitor and sent down to fight the cursed Moebian inhabitants of a city fallen to Chaos.

I’ve got big hopes for this one. Let’s check it out.

Big thanks to GW for the complimentary copy of the box to review.

  1. I think I want this. I'm not sure I want it bad enough to pay the 100 bucks or so for it.

  2. I get my copy in a few days time, can't wait.
I am planning on doing some custom rules for a Beast of Nurgle, Chaos Ogryn, and Daemonhost.

Otherwise, I really hope that they expand on this game, because its not a Barnes and Noble exclusive.

  3. It would be great to introduce other playable characters that you could bring on missions. They could go the route of gloomhaven and make it really awesome

  4. This looks like gloomhaven ‘lite’ for 40k. It also seems like a game that is great for solo play. Despite the price, I’m pretty intrigued now.

  5. Aren't Silver Tower+, Blackstone Fortress+ & Cursed City co-operative GW games?

I'm confused about your vision of this simple lil 'boxed game'. I can only think there's a conflation of your vision for a DT game from a few years back & the actuality of this game.

& yes, that it's a better co-operative game than the Warhammer Quest series of games.

& what this co-operative game has in common with the Versus games of Underworlds.

Not meaning to be an asshat. Just generally not understanding the utmost allure this has on you.

  6. It looks really interesting to me but… it is a real shame that this "introductory" game it is so EXPENSIVE.

  7. Thats pricey. Like lost of their stuff lately. I’ll put up with it for real kill team, but this is just a bit much for models that aren’t new or interesting. 80 might have been fine. I’ll have to think about it more after I watch the lets play.

  8. Totally agree about pulling in more players, my wife likes coop games that are rules light, I haven’t bought any 40k in years but have preordered this, great review Ash

  9. I was actually excited about this, but once again GW makes a product so over priced for what you get that I can't, in good conscience, buy it. I have to agree with some other posts here that what you get in this box is not worth more than the Barnes & Nobles exclusive releases. I have purchased a few of those, and for what they contain, they are set at a good price point. The sad thing is, this type of game's target audience is casual board gamers who might be interested in 40k, but not the normal games, and gamers who love the video game. But at this price neither of them will buy it. Hell, it would be cheaper to just buy the actual video game. And for hardcore 40k fans? Many of them probably already own 50% – 80% of the miniatures included. So why pay $100+ to buy generic rules and some cardboard and cards? At least make all original, game inspired sculpts if you're going to charge such a ridiculous price and try to justify it as a collector's item. I agree with Ash that an expanding game like this, set in the 40k universe, would be great. But at the price GW is selling it at? It's not going to happen. Maybe… MAYBE… this gets one or two expansions. But I doubt it. This has "one shot" written all over it. I'll be waiting to see it discounted on Amzon before I even think about buying this. And that's a shame.

  10. I was very excited for this until I saw the price point. 85eur for a couple of sprues and cardboard. Nope, sorry, won't do it. It's about twice as much as I was willing to spend.

  11. At the $40-$50 Barnes & Noble price point, it'd be a must buy. As it stands, I get buyer's remorse just looking at it.

  12. I wonder if an operative from the Exaction Squad would look better than the Kasrkin? Next is trying to figure out a replacement for the Psycher?

  13. I’ve pre ordered it as a good beer and pretzels game. Also as an into for my girlfriend’s 10yr old daughter. Are the 10 traitor guardsmen to be built as x3 Troopers, Commsman, Gunner, Grenade launcher, Flamer, Sharpshooter and a Chieftain? Also how is the gunner to be built? Plasma or Melta? Looking to get ahead of the game with existing models owned.

  14. I’m surprised they didn’t add a boss type enemy. Didn’t have to be a squad of Chaos Space Marines, but seems like that would spice the fights up a bit.

  15. I'm kind of surprised they didn't recycle the traitor guard models from BSF for this box. maybe they wanted to justify the price tag. I just think it would have been nice if all the models were push fit.

  16. Totally into this, i just want a premade programme to govern the movement of the enemies that i cant be bothered to do myself, give me that with tokens and cards and I'm in. Also thanks for pointing out, why the hell have they not done a 40k underworlds? It would NEVER be in stock. They would make so much damn money from that lol

  17. That sounds really good. I like the sound of it a lot…but it’s ¥15,300🥲 I can get A Game Of Armoured Combat for ¥12,100.😔

  18. This sounds like the style of game I actually wanted instead of kill team. Fast setup and tear down for a casual coop game night, sounds close enough to just steal kill team rules to expand it in places, etc.

  19. I’m so glad you’re excited about it – I am too. I play the Space Marine Adventures Doomsday Countdown solo play game at home semi-regularly and over time have customised it a bunch. I’ve had great fun with it but it’s got a little old now due to the lack of variety in missions (outside of the randomised board) and no expansions… so I’m all in for this! A new casual solo play game in the 40k universe I can play of an evening? Yes please. As a Kill Team player as well it’s nice to see it being used as an on ramp for KT as well. Hopefully shows GW knows KT is a game that has staying power now.

I really hope with this one like you said we get some expansion content. White Dwarf would be perfect!

  20. I like the concept may pick it up. I do however think the price point is a bit too high to be a blockbuster bring people in box it wants to be. That being said I am a sucker for these adventure quest games and If they keep releasing expansions I am likely in.

  21. I remember your GMG review about the new Kill Team being great for the people who are already into Kill Team. This is that gateway to Kill Team for the casual player, which is then the way you get someone to combat patrol and a 1K army. Good leveling up in my opinion, because GW is missing a good dungeon crawl.

  22. Oh man, a 40k version of Underworlds would be AMAZING. I think I’ll try Darktide, but the price and the laziness with the mixed-mold types/molds from existing sets really makes me pause first.

  23. Easy to be excited for a game you get for free. US$110 is an insane price tag. Curious why you didn't mention that part.

  24. You got me considering this but OMFG, $110??? GTFO. I dont think Im ever going back to GW. What 'new player' is gonna drop 110 on this Barnes & Noble $50 repack?
