Can Switch 2 Live Up to the Switch

The Switch has been Nintendo’s most successful home console, and it’s currently on track to become not only their most successful handheld, but possibly the top selling system of all time surpassing the PS2. With this much success and momentum and going into a new system launching next year, I have to wonder: Can the Switch 2 (or whatever it is Nintendo ends up releasing) live up to the Switch’s success?

  1. Switch 2 will be a big seller, but wont outsell Switch 1. Quite a few Switch owners own Steam Decks, PS Portals, RIG Allys, Legion Gos, etc. I predict many of those will wait on their purchase of a Switch 2.

  2. The longer it takes for the new console to hit the market, the more it will fall behind if the rumoured specs prove to be real. The Switch was a succes because of the pandemic (as the only console available to buy) and the lack of handheld competition. Now the market gets flooded with decent and better handheld pc's and more powerful home consoles.

  3. As for passing the PS2 its worth remembering the PS2 had multifunction with DVD at a time that was taking off, and the DS and Switch are a gaming focused system only.

  4. WILD IDEA: yes… have the Switch 2 get all the various upgrades to meet modern standards. But here is a proposed kicker: throw in a "Retro Slot" that will accommodate DS and 3DS cartridges along with the SD Card slot. BAM! The Switch 2 is not only brand new but is also RETRO. This would give Nintendo a chance to recapture all those previous owners/players who have a DS/3DS that has worn out. Both Old & New in one system. That is my Wild Idea.

  5. You simply do not dismiss and leave investors' questions about your upcoming flagship product unanswered while they are staring at a red tinted financial report card and a plummeting Nikkei index unless:
    A) You are supremely confident the product will be a homerun or,
    B) You are not willing and/or ready to show your hand just yet.
I honestly don't know which of the two would be preferable.

  6. I really think Nintendo needs to step it up as far as power goes. A larger screen would be cool as well for playing more immersive games in handheld mode. At the end of the day, I will probably buy it, especially if it has backwards compatibility in a good bit more power.

  7. Yes they can. It's simple. Double its processing power, Switch compatible, and for the love of Zeus, replace those god-awful Joycons!!

  8. if nintendo goes all out and give ''ps5 pro'' atleast ps5 graphics it'd be nice but graphics are just graphics gameplay matters more, how good gpx do you need etc

  9. If the next Nintendo console is powerful enough to run most 3rd party stuff, it’ll do amazing.
But, knowing Nintendo, it’ll have some gimmick or other. Hopefully that pushes it to places we haven’t even thought about yet.
I do not need backward compatibility, I’ll keep a Switch in my collection to play this games.
I would think we will get previews starting early in 2025, then we will get an idea of what we could expect to see.

  10. You make a good point about affordability!
Based on this alone its difficult to claim that it will surpass the OG Switch.

  11. I bought a Zelda Switch OLED that has stayed in its box. I will also buy a Zelda Switch Lite that will also stay in its box.

I love the Zelda special editions so much!

  12. I hope that Switch 2's games can be played on Switch "1" I like my Zelda edition Switch and I want to live up-to-date with it.

  13. The switch 2 if it comes with backwards compatibility will be even more successful than the switch. That's because already having the best exclusive titles, the more powerful hardware will make it possible for massive triple A franchises to launch their games on the switch 2, making it the console with the best catologue of games and thus destroying the competition.

  14. If it’s backward compatible….maybe

If it’s as powerful as a current PC handheld, a lot more people would get excited. Running games like Elden Ring, Balders Gate 3, and the Jedi games would entice people to buy it quicker.
Of course, the fans of Nintendo games can only benefit from an upgrade of any type.

As it is now, there’s a whole lot of really cool devices that give people a smoother more powerful experience than the Switch. Not many people get excited about Switch ports anymore, because if you invested in a PC handheld, you get way better performance and at a fraction of the price for the game you’d pay $60 for on the Switch.

  15. I dont think it's going to be even half as successful. Nintendo has waited for too long and now everyone that wants a powerful handheld have moved on to an rog ally or steamdeck. So what the switch 2 does is going to be far less impressive.

  16. my predictions for the next nintendo console:

    – it will be a cloud only device and it will only work with an internet connection

    – they will no longer sell physical media

    – they will offer some bullshit for sale like "amiibo cards" as replacement for physical games

    – the console will be cheap, but it will be a significantly inferior product compared to the switch

    – it won't be backwards compatible but they will offer a "subscription" where you can buy/rent cloud-based switch games

    – the latency for online games will be just as bad as it is now if not worse due to overcrowded servers

those are my biggest concerns regarding nintendo's direction. like it or not nintendo has a lot more similarities to apple than any of their fans want to admit.

  17. I know a lot of people especially YouTubers are excited about the Switch 2. Personally I'm still very happy with my regular Switch. It plays the games I love. I have no reason to get the new system until they come out with a new Legend of Zelda game for it.

  18. I liked the concept of the Wii U. I think if you were able to keep the functionality of the Switch, but rather than having to dock the switch, you could somehow connect it wirelessly to a central hub of sorts if you wanted to play it on your screen (You'd still have the option to connect it to the dock if you wanted the upscale in resolution). Then you could still utilize your switch as a type of game pad or standalone handheld. I think that would be the best natural progression of sorts which would also allow the implementation of older games such as Xenoblade X if trying to port the game was too difficult.

  19. personally i feel like if nintendo can do any upgrade well itl probably be the switch, all they really need to do is boost its power and give us a new nintendo gimmick that isnt stupid like wii u

  20. Getting a Switch 2 for sure can't wait for the next Mario Oddysey, SMB Wonder, Metroid, Zelda, Xenoblade, Luigi's Mansion

  21. I know that this might be a reach but I think nintendo should double down to sheer horse power this time for switch 2. I really hate it when I know that I have an amazing game but runs like dogshit on my switch.

Frame generation tech has come a long way and nintendo should take advantage of that.

  22. Nintendo has tightened its grip on the combination of success: self-reliance, a hybrid gaming device, the release of many high-quality exclusives that meet the public’s demand, and Nintendo has Pokemon.

  23. Is take switch 2 but think if the like for like hybrid comes along at $400 they should also consider both a lite and tv only version at the lower price point. Still has the entry level pricing for those that only play at home or on the go, but you can pay more to get both.
