This Console Generation Has Been Almost Completely Useless So Far

This November, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will both be four years old, which means both consoles are a little bit past the halfway point in their lifecycles, which is absolutely nuts to think about, because the both current-gen platforms barely have anything to show for their four years of existence so far.

Usually when a console is entering its fourth year, it has well and truly hit its stride, following up on consistent past support with a steady string of new releases to build up a healthy library of games that cannot be played on previous generation consoles. That, however, has very much not been the case with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S so far. Here, we talk about all of that and more.

  1. Funny how he had to go back to the 360 era to list noteworthy games for Xbox. 😂😂😂😂Rip Trash box series L, aall thier games are PC day one and now thier games are on Playstation. Xbox is so dead 😂😂😂😂😂😂 can't make this shit up

  2. There needs to be a video game crash where everyone boycotts these companies as if all they put out is utter unoptimized garbage they should be shut dowm

  3. It's funny how we are 4 years in, and we only have a handful of games that are truly next gen. (mainly only, Hellblade 2, Black Myth Wokong, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake and Astro Bot.) Everything else is either that dreaded cross gen, or are remakes/remasters.

  4. Elder Millennial rant here. Gaming since 1991. This is not a traditional console generation. This is the “Remaster Console” gen. PS5/Xbox Series are basically kickass time capsules that can hold/play the last 25+ years of collective gaming. If you market them that way, then they’re great machines.

I think this gen might one of our last opportunities to get a brand new machine loaded with quality games that can function without having to handshake to some ONLINE service to let you play OFFLINE games.

Gaming is getting weird with business practices, DRM, DLC milking, price increases, etc. Games are less artful and more about pressing the positive reward center buttons of the brain. It disturbs me to a degree. In the future, I think we’ll see a lot of currently existing games and potentially even brand new games disappear behind subscription paywalls for access.

This is my last gen buying consoles. Most of the greatest games ever have probably already been made anyway, and we’ve gotta be losing steam on these seemingly nonstop “remasters” sometime soon.

Now is the time to get a machine and focus on building your game library only when games are on sale. Buying games at full price in the current day is foolish.

I have plans to get a PS5 w/disc. However, I currently have a black Series S 1TB w/1tb Expansion Card and 4TB external HDD. I plan on getting a second Series S, load it with games, take it offline ,and put it away somewhere safe for my kids to play in the future when they’re old enough.

Buy your hardware (back up hardware, too) and games now. Then run, and don’t look back.

  5. PS4 and Xbox One was the peak of Consoles era, Tech been on the decline since. TVs and Cell phones are in same boat.. Medern technology peaked in 2010s not much left to offer

  6. In hindsight I am happy that I never got a PS4 back in the day so atleast now I have a big catalogue of games to catch up on and a lot of the remakes are pretty cool. Also not having so much time bcs of work and other obligations limits my gaming time anyways. Still it is weird to see my PS5 turned off for months at a time, but even just for Demon Souls, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Spiderman 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Hogwarts Legacy, Gran Turismo 7 & The Last of Us Remakes it was worth it for me. I would have to upgrade my PC to enjoy some of these at the same quality and with GTA 6 on the horizon I will still put a couple hundred hours on my PS5 in its lifetime so overall still worth it.

Will I buy a PS6 however, I don't know… atleast I will wait a couple of years into its lifecycle and possibly for the PS6 Pro before I consider it. But they will definitely have to convince me it is worth the upgrade and I suspect they will still be releasing games on both PS5 & PS6 for a good while into the lifecycle of the next gen.

  7. Graphics have peaked to a point where we shouldn’t be worrying about new hardware for a while. I have no interest in a ps6. The timeline for new games to hit the market has gotten ridiculous.

  8. Useless? Video games are inherently useless. They’re just something people do for fun. The real problem nowadays is people acting like games serve some higher artistic purpose outside of fun. People really need better things to worry about. Ive really enjoyed my PS5.

  9. Moore's Law died. People in semiconductor physics predicted this since the mid 2000's. You simply no longer get exponential improvements in computing. You can no longer brute force graphics improvements or other issues.

  10. problem is developers want to sell us digital games, so they make sure they will play on old gen and current gen so more people have access.

  11. Pandemic, and scalpers really ruined this generation. They didn’t make enough consoles and the ones that did got taken by scalpers. It took me nearly 3 years to finally just be able to walk into a store and walk out with a console. Developers couldn’t sell next gen games because no one had next gen consoles so to keep revenue flowing they had to do cross gen releases. Which means current gen games are really all last gen games with enhanced graphics and frame rate. They need to figure out the scalping issue or just flood the market with so many consoles that these idiots just end up with a closet full of consoles.

  12. There are great developers making great games getting buried beneath the slop that people buy and talk about.

Not one major games journalist is gonna cover these games because it doesn't get the clicks. It's just hard to think for yourself anymore I guess

  13. Super discouraging to buy all this hardware from scalpers… to have very few PS5 exclusive games. God of War Ragnarok in particular coming out for PS4 and PS5 made me super bummed that I didn't have the best and newest generation console for nothing. And still no Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 only version. That said, I love this machine. I no longer have a PS4. I do still have my PS3 for some reason. Disc movies? I never use the disc on my PS5.

  14. Sony has 5 games that saves them for saying the ps5 it’s just the PS4 pro 2

  15. Remember playing Guitar Hero? Dance Dance Revolution? Buzz? There's a serious lack of novelty in the PS5 generation. PS4 brought VR home, but was too expensive for most to enjoy. Affordable and unique experiences are definitely absent from the current generation.

  16. The last game I bought was South Park Snow Day. It wasn't available on Xbox one, so I bought it on the Nintendo switch.

  17. This is the generation of remastered games. And as much as I love being able to play remastered gems I have never played before, I do hope we will see new really good games from 2025 and forward.

  18. Playing older games in 4K with HDR and SSD loading times, isnt a fail to me. And there are new games coming out.

  19. Totally agree – but you are ignoring the issue of corporate private equity firms buying up game studios, firing half the staff and ruining game launches. Thats a whole other video

  20. Absolutely no dispute that the current gen (PS5/XSX) is a massive disappointment – but for me it's just a continuation of the disappointment of the last (PS4/X1) gen.

The games mentioned at 1:02 weren't a patch on the brilliant ones from the 360/PS3 referenced at around 1:37.

  21. Says a lot when companies are too scared to release a current gen game so we are held back by all the cross platform and last gen releases. I can barely think of any games that could ONLY be on Xbox/PS5.

  22. This is the first gen where I'm mostly playing last gen games I don't think I was playing this many last gen games on the ps2 or 3 that had backwards compatibility too.

  23. 4:40 Lol!!! at people who still believe the pandemic was a reason that video game production slowed down

  24. So let’s see, console gaming has been around for about what? 50 years or so? I can’t believe we hit a plateau in such a short amount of time. This doesn’t bode well for the future of the industry. I wonder if console gaming will still be around in 20-30 years.

  25. Modern consoles have inspired me to embrace retro gaming roms and I thank them for that.

  26. PS5 has been a waste of money..
It's been so bad, that I've switched over to PC. Wish I would've done sooner.

  27. I have all the systems but honestly I find myself gaming on my pc more and more. Pc gaming has way more options for games and the steam library is inane. There are also so many community mods and indie games available to play that are fun like older gen games.

  28. This was the generation that finally motivated me the get into PC gaming.. all the Xbox games come to PC anyway and most Sony games have been coming to PC as well. But the main reason is I could play previous gen games with better performance and also be able to play early access games which I LOVE

  29. It has Stellar Blade but nothing else that could be a system seller, it's very sad to say. I have four games that are ps5 only? maybe… But I primarily play PC now.

It's difficult to not memory hole the pandemic response and how much it effected things, even then the fact that more games haven't released can no longer be blamed on that and instead at the hands of developers.
