Justin Marshall Reviews Springboks’ Thrilling 31-27 Win over All Blacks

Justin Marshall – 81-test former All Blacks halfback and rugby commentator – joins Martin Devlin on It’s Only Sport, offering his thoughts on the Springboks’ 31-27 win over the All Blacks in Johannesburg. The Boks won their third successive test over their old rivals, in the first clash between them since last year’s Rugby World Cup final in Paris. The match featured its fair share of contentious calls made by officials, and has caused a stir among the New Zealand mainstream media, with suggestions the All Blacks haka was disrespected when music was played and a plane flew over the stadium as the Kiwi players were performing it.

Marshall talks about the haka issue first and whether or not this is just a silly media beat-up as opposed to a genuine issue. Then, he and Devlin go in-depth on the test discussing promising signs the All Blacks showed in the first hour of play, their struggle to score points late in games, and more.

  1. Justin Marshall: They didn't watch us doing our stupid dance…๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  2. 20 years of the ABs putting teams away in the last 20 caused so much heartbreak for many fans of opposite teams. Never thought this would change but there you go. Have some of your own medicine and may it continie for the next couple of years, I mean decades

  3. I look forward to the Haka almost as much as the game. Lovely bit of tradition.

  4. This is pathetic. NZ should only be allowed to do Haka in NZ. Dis is Ons Fokn Huis. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Mackenzie says he connects with his ancestors during Haka. Huh ? Heโ€™s Scottish FFS. Was he waiting for Braveheart to run onto field ๐Ÿ˜‚

  5. The plane thing is a salute to freedom and Mandela from 95 thats why they do it, but with rubbish timing… so in summary pomp with bad timing, it backfired for the saffas

  6. It was an honest mistake. In 2022 I was at the stadium when we played New Zealand (I think this is what Justin was talking about) and on that day the plane was supposed to come over twice but they got the timing out and they abandoned the second fly over with the players on the field. But if are there it is a hair-raising experience. Ellispark man, if you haven't been, it is something else.

  7. It was a timing issue, it wasnt done on purpose. South africa apologized. Calm down Justin, it was an accident.

  8. JM one of the best commentators in rugby and least biased. Pity NZ media can't handle his more objective view…. He is still and understandably so… Slightly kiwi biased but not at the cost of what he sees and says. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

  9. Justin to head coach of the ABs
Get rid of old players get in new and hungry players

  10. The huddle before the Haka threw the timing out for the A380..They had precise settings for a certain tim countdown after first anthem starts

  11. Please NZ take a good look at the hakka, it looks foolish, if I were an opposing player I would not be able to stand and watch this spectacle without laughing out loud the whole way through.

  12. Pre-game bullshit? Let South Africans be South Africans IN South Africa. I get the respect-thing re haka, but dont call the theatrics for South African fans "pre-game bullshit". You love haka, we love pre-game bullshit. Timing was off because NZ decided they have the right to waste time by praying for someone we dont know. Fine with that, but then accept that you are throwing out a schedule designed for South African "pre-game bullshit". Other than that weird comment its always enlightening to listen to various pundits, legend players of the great game, different perspectives and honest commentary from different countries.

  13. As a Saffa, I was appalled at the noise and off timing of the plane. We really do have the utmost respect for the AB and the Haka. Justin on point with his evaluation. See you again on Saturday! ๐Ÿ‘Š

  14. Just came across this podcast, as a sports & news junkie; love it. Subscribed. Great and astute analysis and reviews on matters rugby ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

  15. The DJ should be quiet for the Haka. At least show that amount of awareness & respect.

  16. The Haka is nz heritage and culture….the plane dates back to 95, part of our remembrance of the most iconic game in Springbok history

  17. Tony Brown should have been chosen as assistant coach long before Macdonald – but crammed crusaders and most of RUGBY NZ thinking has ignored Otago now and in the past. Big mistake as Otago have many NZ University players from almost every province. Not only that but locally born and bred Otagoites and Southlanders are devoted dedicated and loyal to their own people. You should know that coming from just over the hill from Clinton – Mataura, Justin
Time to look to the South again for the Jack McNabs, Lester Harveys. CARL HAYMANS, Dick Conways. Dave Gillespies Josh Kronfields and many others – special extra fuel in the tank in the last 15 – 20 minutes of the game. Hoots mon!!! I agree with you Justin, the ABs are still the best in the world and will beat the boks at Capetown thus fulfilling. William Webb Ellis's purpose of the game – scoring tries.
From 89 year old Otago (Clintonite) and ALL BLACK trialist. Greatly admired you as AB halfback too Justin.

  18. How can you say a nation's sport tradition is "bullshit"? With the same mouth you say SAnz disrespected the haka, the players commitedly respected the haka on that game. I cant come to your house and tell your kids how to behave. As SAnz the song that was playin & the A380 fly over is our sport tradition, you should know better cause you played against springbok in that arena you know whats going on there, that a SAn kraal you cant tell us "we suppose to be quite" UYANYA WENA MSOON

  19. Has Marshy been banned from The Breakdown .? The only AB pundit talking sense ..Welcome to SA Marshy . Much respect.
    Xheers. Enjoy the. Gees

  20. I am South African and can't stand that blady dj music! I would much prefer to watch the Haka than listen to that crap!

  21. After a request by Planet Rugby, World Rugby match officials confirmed that the Mbonambi try was the correct decision. Barrett knocked the ball on, it went backwards for Mbonambi and then he scored the try, just before the line, but then his momentum moved the ball over the line. So, contrary to the Cody Taylor try, Mbonambi's try was legit.

  22. Thereโ€™s always a few nut jobsโ€ฆ but the Haka is the thing that everyone watches even if they donโ€™t watch the game. We would never intentionally disrespect or show disregard for ABs. With big events, mistakes get made. Happy that everyone is good with each other.

  23. When he took Ethan off and not Kane, I think the off the ball work rate of players dropped. Man Ethan was just up in their faces all the time.

  24. The first problem was that it was an Emirates aircraft at a Springbok game playing the AB's in SOUTH Africa

  25. I sleep well at night now knowing Razor Ray can get Marshell on the phone to pick his combination's๐Ÿคฃ

  26. As a Saffa, just love what the Haka brings to Rugby, gives me goosies every time ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ

  27. 1 reason why the fans must respect the haka that has a throat slitting gesture ?
Stuff off, our turf our rules!!

  28. So what if the South Africans do their own little dance during the haka? Please man
Two tries were gifted to the AB's as well.

  29. Huge respect vir ABโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..Haka must be appreciated and treated with respect. I am close to 70 years and in all my life SA v NZ is the highlight of the fierce rugby wrestling to determine who is the best on the day. Also trueโ€ฆ..hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie. โ€ฆ.go Bokke

  30. Justin was very correct in that the Boks are showing signs of what the AB'S were in the mid 2000's. We have a long way to go to get close to the AB win rate.
That been said, Rassie is a mastermind and currently no coach can come close to him from a stradegy point of view.
